SpaceX Cellular Threat Stuns the Telecom Market

The cell phone industry was absolutely shaken today following reports that Elon Musk’s SpaceX is moving ahead with plans to launch its own independent, nationwide mobile phone network using Starlink satellites. The sudden news caused stock prices for telecom giants like AT&T and Verizon to drop heavily as investors realized the massive competitive threat descending from orbit. While a space network like this could seamlessly deliver high speed data and calls to completely isolated rural towns and deep ocean zones where traditional cell towers can never be built, it also raises the threat of a global monopoly. This could easily choke out older cell companies and put the internet infrastructure of entire countries into the hands of a single private billionaire, proving that space exploration tech is now directly colliding with everyday consumer phone bills. Also, this will force the other telecom giants to try and keep up with what SpaceX is trying to do, or they will be losing a lot of customers in the future.
